Zhang Qi is a Professor of Architecture at the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, and the host architect of AA Design and Research Studio. Zhang Qi obtained both Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Architecture from Tianjin University, and obtained his Doctor of Engineering degree from Kobe University in Japan. His main research fields are green building design, rural settlement renewal and architectural heritage conservation. He is currently the head of the Ministry of Education’s “111 Intellect Plan”, which sees him involved in the following; “Low-carbon City and Building Innovation Initiative Base”, and presiding over the National Key Research and Development Program “Object & Effect - Oriented Green Building Design Principles and Methodologies” and the National Natural Science Foundation's key project “Design Theory and Methodology of Public Building Space with Low Energy Consumption in Cold Climate Region”. He has also served as executive director of the Architectural Society of China. Combined with the cultivation of architectural professionals, he has been engaged in architectural design practice for several years. In 2012, he won the China Architecture Education Award from the Architectural Society of China and was elected to the “100 Architects of Contemporary China”.
His professional responsibilities include him also being the Deputy Director of the Architectural Professional Steering Committee of the National Higher Education Institutions, the member of the 7th State Council Academic Degrees Discipline Review Group, and the editorial board member of several publications, namely; Urban Environment Design (UED), Architect, New Architecture, China Architectural Education, Journal of Tianjin University (Science and Technology), and Architecture & Detail etc.
