Dr. Xiwei XU is an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture, Tianjin University, China, and a supervisor of Ph.D. candidates. Her other appointed positions are those of Deputy Director of the Department of Urban and Rural Planning, and Director of the Urban and Rural Heritage Conservation and Regeneration Institute. She obtained her Ph.D. from Tianjin University. During the period of 2013-2014, she visited the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at Nottingham University in the UK with the support of the Fund of China Scholarship Council.
Dr. Xu has been nominated as a committee member in the Urban & Rural Governance and Policy Research Academic Committee for Chinese Urban and Rural Planning, and also serves as Deputy Director at the Urban Renewal Committee of the Tianjin Urban Planning Society, and finally she is a member of the Association of Urban Science in Tianjin.
Prof Xu's teaching and research interests include: urban renewal; conservation and development of historical and cultural heritage; and research on low-carbon cities and eco-cities. She has presided over or participated as a core member in research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Science and Technology Cooperation Project, Tianjin Natural Science Foundation, Tianjin Urban-Rural System Research Key Project, and others. She has published widely in leading Chinese journals and English books on these subjects, and has given about 10 lectures in English in Asia and Europe.
As a supervisor of international postgraduate students, her recent studies have focused on global ecological laws of urban spatial evolution, safety measures for historical heritage, site selection for establishment of old towns according to Fengshui rules,cost-benefit balance between owners, governmental and non-governmental organizations in the preservation of cultural heritage, etc. She has also provided consultation work for the China Urban Planning and Design Institute, Tianjin Planning Bureau, Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute, among other institutions.
