Research Theme:The Theory Method and Practice of Urban Regeneration
Zuo Jin, is an Associate Professor, Master’s Supervisor and vice Ph.D. Supervisor of the Department of Architecture at the School of Architecture, Tianjin University. He is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban and Rural History Protection and Development, the Director of Urban Regeneration and Stock Planning Research Studio, and a member of the Academic Committee of the Residential Planning in the Urban Planning Society of China as well as the Deputy Chairman and Secretary-General of the Professional Committee of Urban Regeneration in the Urban Planning Society of Tianjin.
His main research field is the research and practice in urban regeneration, urban design, and urban disaster prevention and mitigation, research and practice in urban renewal, urban design and city disaster prevention and mitigation.
He teaches the design studio of Urban planning and design, the Graduation Project, a class on the theory method and practice of urban stock regeneration planning for undergraduates, as well as the seminar course ‘theory method and practice of Urban regeneration’. He has also taken on eight national-level projects and four provincial-level projects including “National key research and development program of China during the ‘13th Five-Year Plan’” and the ‘The General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China’. Additionally, his monographs ‘Study of Theory and Strategy of Disaster-Prevention Control in Mountainous Urban Design’ and ‘Restoring Reality Departure from Book Cafe’ were published and the theory monograph ‘Suburban Nation’ was translated. He has published more than 30 papers in high-level academic journals including ‘Disaster Advances’, ‘Acta Ecologica Sinica’, ‘Urban Studies’, to name a few.
He has presided over more than 20 major urban planning and design projects. The joint project ‘Regeneration Action Planning Of Traditional Community in Xiamen – A Case Study of Shapowei’ (the second Project Principal) won the first prize of the 2013 National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning Design of China; the joint projects ‘Study on Organic Regeneration Action Planning of Traditional Block in Tianjin - A Case Study of Plot No.5 in Tianjin Xiaobailou Building’ (the second Project Principal) won the second prize of the 2017 National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning Design.
Zuo Jin obtained his qualifications; a Bachelor of Architecture, a Master of Science in Building Technology, and the Doctor of Urban Planning and Design from Chongqing University from 1996 to 2011. He was a visiting scholar at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Tunhai University Taiwan and the Department of Geography of the National Taiwan Normal University. In recent years, he has organized a number of academic seminars as a major academic sponsor in the field of urban regeneration, including the 2018 (2nd) Symposium on urban and rural regeneration between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and Hongkong (Tianjin), the 2017 Symposium on urban and rural regeneration between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and Hongkong (Taipei), and in 2016 The Cross-Strait Forum on Urban Regeneration and Sustainable Development (Tianjin).
