Zhang Yukun is a Professor of the Department of Architecture at the School of Architecture,,Tianjin University, where he is also a member of the Academic Committee. Zhang first graduated from Tianjin University in 1982 when he received his Bachelor’s degree of Architecture in Engineering, thereafter he received his Master’s degree as well as his Doctoral degree from the same university. He holds several academic positions, such as director of the Key laboratory of Information Technology for Architectural Culture Inheritance, Culture and Tourism Ministry of China (Tianjin University), Associate Director of Expertise Board of Chinese Vernacular Houses of Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Associate Director of Vernacular Houses Expertise Committee of the National Architecture Research Association of China.. He has received multiple awards in the field of architecture, including the Architecture Design Award of China-Architectural Education Award by the Architectural Society of China in 2018, Master of Chinese Vernacular Architecture by the National Architecture Research Association of China in 2016. Additionally, Zhang also serves as an editorial board member of a series of Chinese architecture journals including The Huazhong Architecture, Architecture and Culture, and Chinese Architectural Education.
Zhang’s research interests are mainly on settlement change, military settlement of China’s great wall, ancient architecture and astronomy, and productive cities (urban farming, built environment integrated photovoltaic and any other green productive strategy and planning etc.). He has studied vernacular settlement and buildings for more than 30 years, and since the early 2000s he has focused on the research of defense systems and military settlements of China’s great wall with his team,revealing the geo-distribution and the systematic levels of the military settlement in the nine defense areas along the Ming great wall. In the interim, Zhang along with his colleagues and students has spent more than a decade studying more on eco-village, urban agriculture, and building integrated photovoltaic, and thereafter presented a concept of productive cities which will transform the modern cities from ‘consuming’ to ‘productive’ to meet the goal of sustainable development in the globe. His academic achievements have seen him receive 6 scientific research foundation supports at national level including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Major National Fund for Social Science and National Science and Technology Support Program. Furthermore, the students who graduated from his office received support for more than 30 research projects from national level scientific funds too.
Zhang Yukun has published several academic books and more than 180 papers in total. He has also participated in the first Annals of The Great Wall of China, he edited the Volume 4 “Bianzhen Towns, Fortresses, and Passes” in 2016. As chief editor and second author of the Great Wall and Settlement Series, he has presented 6 books on Great Wall’s military settlements since 2017, and another seven under publication.
