From 2006 to 2018, Tianjin University's School of Architecture and UCLA's School of Art and Architecture jointly organized the 13th Joint Teaching Studio on Architectural Design. The studio was jointly guided by Professor Ben Refuerzo from UCLA, several professors from Tianjin University's School of Architecture, including Xu Zhen and Feng Gang, Chief Architect Guo Nu from Shanghai's AUD (Architecture & Urban Design Consulting Inc.).Students were selected from the fourth-grade undergraduates and second-grade postgraduates. Each year the two sides had a total of 20 - 25 students who needed to work for about 10 weeks. Every year the studio selected hot architectural issues or special plots and competitions as joint design topics, the main parts of which were completed independently by both parties.Teachers and students from the two schools were engaged in short-term joint work during a certain period of time in order to expand communication and discussion among them. The studio held joint reviews in Tianjin and Los Angeles in succession. Another component of the teaching content of the joint studio was to provide a good platform for teachers and students from both sides to experience different cultures and learn from excellent architectural design works of the two countries.Through exchange visits, students’ understanding and appreciation level of different architectural cultures and art can be improved. The TJU-UCLA Joint Design Studio has not only expanded the international influence of Tianjin University's School of Architecture, but also exchanged teaching ideas and methods between two schools while they learned from each other, thus building a cross-cultural bridge of architectural design teaching and communication, which has played a positive role in the long-term development of the school's teaching.
