The ASEAN-China Symposium on Smart Cities and Sustainable Development was held in Guiyang, Guizhou Province on August 22, 2024. The event was hosted by Tianjin University (TJU) and undertaken by Guizhou University(GZU) and Guizhou Institute of Technology(GZIT), with the support of the ASEAN-China Centre (ACC). It was a key event in the 2024 China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week. TJU's Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, School of Architecture, and School of Civil Engineering jointly organized the symposium.
The opening ceremony and keynote speeches were chaired by Xiao Songshan, assistant to the president of TJU. Han Qinghua, deputy secretary of the CPC TJU Committee, emphasized the symposium's role in strengthening academic and research collaboration between China and ASEAN, contributing to sustainable development goals. Professor Ya Ping Wang, a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, delivered the keynote address.
The 1st session of the afternoon program, chaired by Professor Yang Wei, vice dean of the School of Architecture at TJU and Professor Zeng Peng, vice dean of the School of Architecture at TJU delivered an opening remark. The afternoon session focused on "Low-Carbon and Smart Built Environment, featured by presentations from prominent scholars, including Professor Pan Liangming from GZIT, Professor Atch Sreshthaputra from Chulalongkorn University, Professor Xu Shen from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Associate Professor Zdravko Trivic from National University of Singapore, Associate Professor Xu Xiwei from TJU, Associate Professor Yusfida Ayu Abdullah from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Associate Professor Wang Yu from TJU.
Scholars from home and abroad exchanged views on smart city development and sustainable urban infrastructure, promoting further cooperation between China and ASEAN. As a leading member of the ASEAN-China Network for Cooperation and Exchange among Engineering and Technology Universities, TJU continues to play a vital role in fostering innovative international research and practice to promote sustainable development in the South East Asian region.
