Converging Digital Intelligence for a Sustainable Future: ASEAN-China Symposium on Built Heritage Concludes Keynote and Expert Reports

On July 30, 2026, the keynote speeches and expert reports of the ASEAN-China Symposium on Digital Information System and Sustainable Renewal of the Built Heritage, organized by Tianjin University and co-organized by Guizhou University and Guiyang University, were successfully held at the ASEAN Forum Hall of the CAECW Permanent Site in Guiyang. As a key component of the 2026 China–ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, the event on 30 July brought together leading scholars and industry experts from both China and abroad. The School of Architecture at Tianjin University invited 12 experts and scholars from China and ASEAN countries to deliver keynote and invited presentations, thereby promoting international exchange and cooperation in the field of architectural heritage conservation based on digital information systems.


At the opening ceremony on the morning of July 30, opening remarks were delivered by distinguished guests, including: Liu Baoli, former Executive Secretary-General of the CAECW Organizing Committee Secretariat, and former Deputy Director-General and Inspector of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education; Yu Changxue, Director of the China Center for International People-to-People Exchange, Ministry of Education; He Di, Director of the Education, Culture and Tourism Division of the ASEAN-China Centre; Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, Centre Director of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development (SEAMEO RIHED); Liang Yuning, Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in China; Xiuying, Minister Counselor for Education of the Royal Thai Embassy in China; Fan Tiegang, President of Guiyang University; Peng Jie, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guizhou University Committee; and Xiao Songshan, Assistant to the President of Tianjin University. All parties unanimously agreed that this symposium represents a practical academic endeavor toward building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future. They expressed shared expectations to build consensus, yield actionable and practical outcomes, and jointly promote the perpetual transmission and sustainable prosperity of regional cultural heritage.

The subsequent keynote session was moderated by Zhang Ling, Director of the Office of International Cooperation at Tianjin University. Kang Jian, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary Dean of the School of Architecture at Tianjin University, delivered the first keynote address titled "Sound Environment in Heritage Buildings," delving into cutting-edge acoustic applications in heritage preservation. Following this, Zhang Jie, National Master of Engineering Survey and Design and Professor at Tsinghua University, presented an insightful speech titled "Urban Regeneration Guided by Contextual Field Inheritance: Exploration and Application of Digital-Intelligent Technologies," offering an innovative, digitally intelligent pathway for the sustainable development of urban spaces.

During the event, Fan Tiegang, President of Guiyang University, Xiao Songshan, Assistant to the President of Tianjin University, and Tang Honggang, Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Guizhou University, jointly unveiled the plaque for the "China-ASEAN Network of Engineering Universities Joint Workshop."

The expert report session on the afternoon of the 30th was moderated by Professor Yang Wei, Vice Dean of the School of Architecture at Tianjin University, whilst Professor Zhang Xinnan, Executive Dean, delivered a welcome address on behalf of the School. This session unfolded from a range of in-depth and diverse academic perspectives, featuring Professor Emma Marinie Ahmad Zawawi from Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia), Professor Chen Zhihong from Huaqiao University, Professor Zhou Jiangping from the University of Hong Kong, Professor Jiang Hong from Southeast University, Professor Zuraini Md. Ali from the University of Malaya (Malaysia), Professor Zhou Minghao from Tongji University, Professor He Jie from Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Professor Chi-tathon Kupwiwat from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), Professor Li Zhe from Tianjin University, Professor Buddha Shrestha from the University of Kathmandu (Nepal), Professor Guo Rui from Guizhou University, and Lecturer VENH Lay Ou from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. A total of 12 experts and scholars delivered academic presentations in turn. The participating experts engaged in lively and in-depth discussions centered on the sustainable regeneration of architectural heritage and cutting-edge applications of digital information systems.

Through high-standard preparation and meticulous general coordination, the full-day symposium events on July 30 not only established a premier platform for high-level academic dialogue among scholars from China, ASEAN, and Belt and Road countries, but also significantly broadened the international multilateral cooperation network of the School of Architecture at Tianjin University, laying a solid foundation for future educational and scientific synergy.
