Professor Kang Jian, Honorary Dean of our School's School of Architecture, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, and Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, has been awarded the Royal Medal by the British Acoustics Society. The Royal Medal is the highest award of the British Acoustics Society, presented to renowned scholars worldwide who have made outstanding contributions to the field of acoustics. The medal is named after Lord Rayleigh, who served as the President of the Royal Society (British Academy of Sciences) and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904. Previous recipients of the Royal Medal include aviation acoustics pioneer Sir Lighthill, classical architectural acoustics giant Beranek, and former president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Beranek.
Kang Jian graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, and conducted post-doctoral research at the Humboldt Institute for National Building Physics in Germany. He is currently a professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL), which ranks first in the QS World University Rankings for architecture. Academician Kang Jian is an international leading scholar in architecture and environmental acoustics, and his research papers rank first in citation rates in this field. He also serves as the President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration. Since 2019, he has been serving as the Honorary Dean of our School's School of Architecture.
