Highlights of R-Cells:Lifetime Healthy Living

DATE: 2021-06-22

Team Tianjin U+ team profile

Team Tianjin U+ is led by the School of Architecture, Tianjin University, and unites with APEC Sustainable Energy Center, Construction Engineering, Construction Environment, Automation, Machinery, Intelligence and Computing, International Engineering College, and other internal institutions and disciplines. , Carrying out school-enterprise cooperation with Tianjin University Architectural Design and Planning Institute Co., Ltd., uniting Tianjin Urban Construction University, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, and integrating the technical strength of many enterprises, forming a joint production, education and research team. There are more than 20 team consultants and instructors, and more than 50 participating doctoral students, graduate students, and undergraduates.

                                                 About R-CELLS

                                                   R-CELLS

The project, named R-CELLS, is a solar house prototype with ‘positive energy, full recycling, zero emission’ as the technical goals, aiming at creating ‘a lifetime healthy and sustainable home’. It symbolizes the self-adapting, self-circulating, and self-organizing characteristics of biological cells. By adapting prefabricated and customizable modules, innovative solar building integration technology, and close-to-nature design, it targets a solar energy housing prototype that can be replicated in rural and urban circumstances in North China.

                                              Scheme design concept

In terms of sustainable building design concepts and methods, R-CELLS Residence emphasizes the design principle of "passive priority, active optimization" and innovative solar building integration technology. In terms of passive solar energy utilization, drawing on the characteristics of traditional Chinese architecture "anti-universal to the sun", an asymmetric V-shaped roof is adopted to increase southward heat gain and daylighting, and to maximize the use of passive solar energy in winter. At the same time, increase the roof photovoltaic area to provide enough space for the use of active solar energy.

                                          Variable module combination

In terms of architectural design concepts and methods, R-CELLS residence adopts the design of prefabricated + custom combined modules. Module functions can be combined according to the needs of users, which can adapt to the needs of the entire family's life cycle.

                                               Prototype expansion

                                         Prototype expansion renderings

The R-CELLS housing prototype can be expanded horizontally and vertically, and can be promoted to urban low-, multi-storey and mid-high-rise residential buildings that are adapted to severe cold and cold climate areas, as well as new-type rural residential buildings in the construction of new rural areas. And through performance simulation optimization and parameterized design methods, the optimization design system of its physical performance, solar energy utilization efficiency, life cycle environmental impact and cost is established to adapt to different environmental and cost conditions.

                                         Overall technical strategy

In terms of overall technical strategy, R-CELLS Residence emphasizes the technical concept of "positive energy, full cycle, and zero emissions". Positive energy refers to the energy surplus of the site; full cycle refers to the internal recycling of energy and water, and the recyclability of building materials; zero emission refers to the net zero emission of CO2 during the operation of the building and zero discharge of domestic wastewater from bathing, kitchen and kitchen.

                                       Profile technology strategy

The R-CELLS residential prototype uses solar energy as the main source of electrical energy, supplemented by battery packs. On the basis of meeting the needs of daily life, the excess electrical energy can be transmitted to the grid, achieving zero energy consumption in the building and being a "producer and seller" of electrical energy transactions. Reduce the energy cost of users and have higher economic benefits.

Wood structure system

R-CELLS adopts a mixed structural system of heavy wood and balsa wood. The structural frame is heavy-duty glulam made of Douglas fir. The structural wall is composed of SPF balsa wood and SIPs structural insulation board. The structural materials are mainly materials that have low environmental impact or high recycling efficiency, such as wood and metal production and processing, and the physical and chemical carbon emissions including the initial construction, replacement and dismantling stages are small. Use environmentally friendly building materials to achieve the goal of human living health during construction and use.

Building life cycle carbon emissions

According to the R-CELLS energy consumption simulation value, in the next 50 years of the estimated building life, the carbon emissions reduced by building photovoltaic power generation and component recycling will exceed the sum of building carbon emissions and electricity carbon emissions during operation. Achieve negative carbon emissions in the life cycle of buildings, which has high environmental benefits.

Barrier-free design

R-CELLS is committed to creating a barrier-free environment for people of all ages and the disabled. The design considers the barrier-free path and the spatial scale of wheelchair movement, such as barrier-free kitchens and bathrooms. The indoor white, wood, and gray tones are gentle and comfortable.

                                           Healing landscape design

Incorporate the healing landscape to create a quiet landscape atmosphere for home recuperation, choose plants with medical value, and play the practical value of plants while creating a good visual effect. The indoor green wall has the functions of air purification, microclimate control, carbon reduction and landscape creation.

                                             BIM Construction

Adopt the smart construction model, use the building information model, and coordinate the management of all disciplines to achieve full digitalization, and help all disciplines to unify the work platform, so that the overall work operation is more efficient, convenient and precise.

                                           Intelligent system

Five functions of the intelligent system

1.Energy management: energy consumption analysis, load forecasting, and dispatching strategies.

2.Environmental regulation: monitoring temperature and humidity, CO2 concentration, PM2.5 concentration, building indoor environment management based on indoor comfort evaluation.

3.Smart home scenarios: household-oriented young people mode, elderly mode, child mode, etc., and function-oriented wake-up mode, away from home mode, sleep mode, etc.

4.Voice interactive control: Intelligent voice controls lighting, air conditioning, smart home, etc.

5.Smart housekeeper: building operation and maintenance reports, energy usage recommendations, preventive maintenance strategies.

Groundbreaking ceremony

The launch ceremony of R-CELLS construction was successfully held at the West Building of Tianjin University at 10 am on April 21, 2021. We are fortunate to invite a total of more than 30 experts and consultants to witness the start of construction of this important node with the teachers and students of Team Tianjin U+.

                                             Construction Site

Subsequently, 15 modules were efficiently hoisted and transported in two days and two nights, and they were "moved" from the West Building to the new National Exhibition and Convention Center as scheduled. R-CELLS will meet with the public at the first GIB exhibition at the National Convention and Exhibition Center from June 24th to June 27th. The final work will be unveiled in Desheng Village, Zhangbei, Zhangjiakou in September 2021 for actual operation and real-time testing.

                                           Little R welcomes you
