Chen Tian is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Architecture, Tianjin University. His theory and practice in the field of urban design has always been an influential representation of the planning academic community. His main research field is on solving complex problems in urban planning and design through comprehensive methods and multidisciplinary collaborations and proposes a school of thought that combines urban planning and design. He recently participated in the research topic of urban planning and design of Sino-Singapore Eco-City in Tianjin, with a focus on the research of ecological city planning methods and implementation strategies. Additionally, Professor Tian pays close attention to the problem of reclamation planning in coastal cities and conducts plenty of empirical research on the planning and construction of reclamation in Tianjin's Circum-Bohai-Sea region. He proposed a sustainable urban reclamation method based on the concepts of ecology, disaster prevention and environmental conservation. He also presided over a series of influential engineering designs, including urban business district planning, small town planning, disaster prevention planning, and urban historical and cultural conservation planning.
Chen Tian holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Architecture and the Doctor of Engineering qualification from Tianjin University. In 2008 he paid a visit to the La Villette School of Landscape in Paris, France. In 2012 he was on two short-term exchange programs with the School of Architecture and Environment of the National University of Singapore as well as the School of Architecture of the University of Hong Kong. In March of the same year, an invitation to visit the University of South Florida was extended to him by the university’s president, Robert M. Macleod.
