I. Development History
The department of environmental design was founded in 1998, began to recruit undergraduate students in 1999. At present, the environmental design major enrolls about 40 undergraduates every year and has master's degree in Design and Art. Professor Dong Ya, the academic leader, is a member of The National Art Professional Master Degree Education Steering Committee, the vice director of The Architectural Art Committee of The National Architecture Steering Committee, a member of a council of Architectural Society of China , and a member of The Environmental Design Art Committee of Chinese Artists Association.
The department of environmental design has always been adhering to the “From the details to the whole” concept of teaching and research. From art and humanistic perspective, the interactive integration of interior and exterior building environment, integral consciousness of environment art detail design and comprehensive aesthetic quality were emphasized. The vision system thinking of building interior and exterior environmental design themes which closely combining with the new connotation of the era have been implemented into teaching and research.
II. Faculties of the Department
At present, there are 15 full-time teachers in the department of environmental design, including 4 professors, 7 associate professors and 4 lecturers. More than half of them have doctoral degrees. This team is composed of teachers from different professional background, such as environmental design, architecture, urban & rural planning, landscape architecture, industrial design, painting, sculpture, etc., which reflects the interdisciplinary and complementary characteristics. It has laid a good foundation for the construction, development and promotion of environmental design.
III. Research Directions
Relying on the advantages of the discipline groups in a comprehensive university and the multidisciplinary background of the school of architecture, as well as the teaching and research institutions such as the accessible research institute and the urban and rural environmental art regeneration design institute, this discipline has formed characteristic research fields such as interior and outdoor micro-environment design, environmental aesthetics, urban and rural environmental art regeneration design and accessible and universal design. The accessible research institute will be upgraded to the university-level institution of Tianjin University Accessible& Universal Design & Research Center in March 2019.
Environmental design department on the basis of living environment science and art, which focus on national construction needs and disciplines development advances and cultivates persons of creative ability and comprehensive design ability for China’s environment art design field, adheres to the integration of production, construction, and achieves the comprehensive development of the discipline in various fields and the leading position.
IV. Main Achievements
The discipline has made outstanding achievements in scientific research in recent years. It has been awarded many research projects which were supported by National Social Science Foundation, National Natural Science Foundation and Social Sciences and Humanities Foundation of Ministry of Education. In recent five years, the young teachers took 18 vertical subjects, including 2 supported by National Social Science Foundation of China, 4 supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 supported by Social Sciences and Humanities Foundation of Ministry of Education, 2 supported by National "Twelfth Five-Year" Plan for Science & Technology, 1 supported by Tianjin Research Program of Application Foundation and Advanced Technology, 1 supported by "Thirteenth Five-Year" National key research and development program, 5 supported by Social Science Foundation of Tianjin. Meanwhile they also won 15 awards, including 5 gold awards, 3 silver awards and 7 bronze awards in the national design and engineering evaluation awards. In the design competitions organized by international and domestic industry associations, students won 37 awards, including 8 gold awards, 11 silver awards and 18 bronze awards.
In recent years, teachers have participated in the technical consultation and engineering design of many national major and key projects. At present, the discipline has established long-term strategic cooperative relations with a number of government departments, scientific research institutes and large design institutes, which has set up a comprehensive training platform for students to realize extensive social, international exchanges and created good employment prospects.
