1. Tianjin University’s discipline of Architecture / Built Environment ranked 30th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject

The global reputation of the School of Architecture, Tianjin University has kept on improving in the recent years, and it has risen to the forefront of international architecture schools. In the QS World University Subject Rankings released in March 2023, Tianjin University ranked 30th globally in the subject of "Architecture and the Built Environment", and 3rd among architectural universities in mainland China.

2. Two adjunct professors of Tianjin University have been elected academicians of the ChinaAcademy of Engineering

Li Xinggang, alumnus, part-time professor and doctoral advisor of School of Architecture, Tianjin University, national master architect of China, was elected as an academician of the China Academy of Engineering; 

Kang Jian, honorary dean, professor and doctoral advisor of School of Architecture, Tianjin University, was elected as a foreign academician of the China Academy of Engineering.

3. Successfully held a number of high-level academic activities

In 2023, we successfully hosted a number of important academic events, including

(1) the “Inaugural Meeting of the Special Committee on Rural Habitat Environment of the Union of Universities for Rural Construction and the 2023 Academic Forum on Rural Habitat Environment”. Leaders from the National Rural Revitalisation Bureau, Tianjin Municipality, the Union of Universities for Rural Construction, and Yang Xianjin, the party secretary of Tianjin University, gave speech at the inaugural meeting.

(2) the 7th Academic Conference on “Architectural Heritage Preservation and Sustainable Development-Tianjin“

(3) the 17th Annual Conference of the International Association of China Planning (IACP), the 20th Cross-Strait Symposium on “University Campus”,

(4) the 20th Annual Conference on "Women in Science and Technology Leadership in Universities",

(5) the 20th Cross-Strait Symposium on "University Campus",

(6) the Annual Conference on Spatial Planning and Governance of Land-Sea Integration and the Establishment of Land-Sea Integration Planning Cooperative Alliance, and

(7) the Establishment of the Special Committee on Cultural Landscapes of China Association for the Protection of Monuments and Sites and the Cultural Landscape Theme Forum.

4. Establishment of the "Sino-French Cultural Heritage and Urban Research Center"

In May, President Jin Donghan of Tianjin University and S.E.Bertrand LORTHOLARY, the French Ambassador to China, signed the cooperation agreement to officially establish the "China-France Center for Cultural Heritage and Urban Studies". The two parties also jointly held the "Sino-French Contemporary Architects Forum" at Tianjin University.

5. Won two National Teaching Achievement Awards in higher education, and three courses were selected as national first-class undergraduate courses

In July, the Ministry of Education announced the 2022 National Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award. ‘The Innovation and Practice of Training Mode for Architectural Excellence Talents in Inheriting the Chinese Construction System’ declared by our school’s team won the second prize of Undergraduate Teaching Achievement Award. The second prize of Graduate Teaching Achievement Award was awarded to our school’s team for ‘Inheriting Chinese Culture and Practice Ecological Civilization: HN-CDIO Training Mode for Innovative Architectural Engineering Talents’.

On April 11, the Ministry of Education issued the Announcement on the Recognition Results of the Second Batch of National-level First-class Undergraduate Courses. Three courses of our institute were selected, namely "Introduction to Architecture", "History of Ancient Western Architecture", "Architectural Design 5, 6 -- Special Design of Green Buildings".

6. Three Multi-disciplinary Teams for University-Industry Partnership recognized by Tianjin Municipality

The multi-disciplinary Teams of "Smart Low-carbon Building and New Energy" led by the discipline of Architecture, "Resilient City and Smart Disaster Prevention" led by the discipline of Urban and rural Planning, and “Rural Ecology and Human Settlement Environment Construction” led by the discipline of Landscape Architecture were successfully selected to be the " Featured Multi-disciplinary Teams of University-Industry Partnership" by the Municipality of Tianjin.

7. The Xuzhong Architecture Forum was held at the World Alumni Conference of Tianjin University

On April 21, the 12th World Alumni Conference of Tianjin University was held in Changzhou City. The launching ceremony of Xuzhong Architecture Forum was successfully held at Mr. Xu's former residence, No. 50, Qingguo Lane Historical and Cultural Block. Xu Zhong was one of the most important architects in modern China. He had been the department head and dean of School of Architecture, Tianjin University for about 20 years from the 1950s to the 1970s. 

8. Won the UIA Innovation in Architectural Education (SDGs) Award

The educational program and student works on "Designing with Nature and Equality" developed by a group of professors and young faculties of School of Architecture, Tianjin University won the honorable mention of the UIA Award for Innovation in Architectural Education in 2023, which was the only honorable mention together with the 4 regional award winners. 

9. Student Awards in Design Competitions Maintain the Leading Position in China

Our student work "LINE/VECTOR" won the only gold medal of Asian Architects Association Student Thesis (graduation design) in 2023; "Meta-Go Dream" won the Bauhaus Prize (the highest prize) of the 8th Bauhaus Prize International Design Competition; "Returns-breathing Paradise" and "Wind • Well Garden" won all the two first prizes of the 2023 Delta Cup International Solar Architecture Design Competition; "Thousands of Light - Xia Mu Tang" won the first prize of the first China Graduate Students "Beautiful China" Innovative Design Competition (BC Awards), ……. Altogether, students of T-Arch have won more than 160 awards in various professional design competitions in 2023.

10. The Alumni Association of the School of Architecture was established in three places

This year, the Tianjin University School of Architecture Alumni Association established branches in Qingdao, Jinan, and Sichuan. So far, the Alumni Association of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University has established 10 branches in important provinces and cities across the country, building a bridge of close communication between alumni and their Alma mater in all aspects.
