Title: New public space – Media Café

A place for your heart in Tianjin University

The aim of the International Workshop is to provide Chinese, Japanese and French students an opportunity to communicate and collaborate with foreign colleagues, from different cultures and backgrounds, to exchange different opinions and compare their perceptions of spaces, notions of inhabiting the city, and environmental relations, while working together on an architectural project.

For this project, students’ group should bring answers to the questions such as:

What kind of public space that students need most, in a Chinese university?

What kind of public space that young guys need most, in their daily life?

What kind of public space makes one feel relaxed and peaceful?

What kind of public space will it be when a young guy needs any kinds of refreshment?

What kind of public space will it be when a student can get the knowledge by happy means?

What kind of public space will it be where a student can have free argument with professors?

What kind of public space will one doesn’t feel lonely when he/she is alone here?

Etc.

Theme

The theme of the workshop is “New public space – Media Café, A place for your heart in Tianjin University”. It will be a public building called Media Café, including an original canteen and a new public facility where provide various possibilities through knowledge or kinds of media. It means that it is not a traditional library, or a learning center where just focuses on knowledge and learning.

Chinese university’s students leave their parents when they enter a university, they live in the campus. For every Chinese student, campus life almost equals all of his/her youth. The life in university is extremely special not only because those years are in their precious youth periods, but also because almost all the memory of youth is closely connected with campus life. Sometimes, roommates become their best friends in their life, since six or four students live in one room together for four or five years, even seven to ten years.

Therefore, in this project, the Media Café will plays an important role in the students’ daily life. It is a public space which can respond students’ various needs in their daily life. Except for learning, it should also be a place when an young guy needs peace of mind, nourishment of the mind, sometimes which is much more crucial not only for their study, but also for their long life. It is a space that supports one to return to his/her own heart, a space where they can regain his/her strength. Furthermore, it is also a space where one can communicate with friends or mentors freely, to gain friendship and wisdom through communication.

The site area is about 18,200 square meters.

・School canteen, about 6,000 square meters; number of people dining: 1,500

・Public space, 3,000sqm

Various and attractive uses in a daily basis and at the events.

Site

The site is in the northern part of Tianjin University campus, surrounded by the residential area for students which comprises parallel-stood three-story or four-story old buildings built before 1970s. This area is the earliest constructed area in Tianjin University.

The main existing building in the center of the site is the First Canteen, the oldest dinning space in Tianjin University, with about 12,000 sqm currently. For years, the square on the south side of the canteen had been the most important public space, not only for outdoor movie show on every weekend night in 1980s, but also for outdoor parties especially for the students who were going to graduate here and be separated with each other in 1990s.

But the square was reconstructed in the end of 1990s, and the activities was disappeared from then, the space became to be a very silent public space, and kinds of activities moved to the east side of campus.
