The Yanqing Venue is one of the three major competition arenas of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Mr Li Xinggang, an alumnus of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, is the Chinese chief architect of the Yanqing Division of the Beijing Winter Olympics, and the 135th torchbearer of the Winter Olympics. He said: "As the chief architect, I found it quite challenging to take charge of such a complicated and large-scale project that occupies over 10 square kilometers site and with a floor area of more than 300,000 square meters. The site is located in a dense mountain forest, which makes the implementation even harder. I hope the coexistence of the venue and the forest environment would provide a world-class sporting experience with minimal disturbance to nature and realize the concept of “Mountain Forest Venues & Ecological Winter Olympics”.
The iconic National Sliding Center is the world’s only south slope track and only snowmobile sledding track in China which meets the Olympic standards. This 1975-meter track is designed with 16 corners. The sunshade roof is erected on the track to protect the athletes and the track while minimizing the impact of energy consumption.
“The south slope track is vulnerable to various climate conditions, so I proposed the idea of orientating the south slope to the north slope at that time. The terrain climate protection system is a technology specially developed for this track, which reflects the concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. " said Mr Li Xinggang
2198 meters is the highest point of Xiaohai Tuo Mountain and is also the starting point of the Alpine Ski Center. It is surrounded by mountains and forests. Seven long and narrow snow trails meander down from the top of the mountain, with a total length of 21 kilometers, including the technical trails, which is currently the highest in China.
The unveiling of the "Bird's Nest" in 2008 was undoubtedly one of the most glorious Olympic moments in the history of China and a highlight of Mr Li Xinggang’s career. On the night of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic opening ceremony, the refurbished “Bird’s Nest” once again amazed the world. The iconic stadium is now managing on a more self-sufficient, more intelligent and lower-carbon platform and representing to the worldwide audience the splendor of Chinese Architecture.
