TJU Student Pocketed First Prize of UIA-HYP CUP in Architectural Design

DATE: 2021-11-22

Recently, the review meeting of "UIA-HYP CUP 2021 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN",organized by Union International des Architects (UIA), School of Architecture of Tianjin University, Urban Environment Design (UED) Magazine, and jointly sponsored by the School of Architecture of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Shanghai Hope Architects Co., Ltd., was successfully held in Beijing.

This UIA-HYP CUP 2021 is chaired by the Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, OMA (Metropolitan) Architects and AMO founder, Harvard University professor Rem Koolhaas with the title "Countryside Dilemmas-New Rural Planning".A total number of 1500 teams of works from home and abroad entered the competition. And 13 internationally renowned architects and educators were invited as judges. After several hours and rounds of review, the result was finalized. 35 works were selected with 1 first prize, 3 second prizes and 8 third prizes and 23 honorable prizes.

The first prize

《Civilization to the years》by Zhao Chenchen, Ma Qirui, Zheng Qi from Tianjin University School of Architecture

The project takes education as the cutting-in point for rural revitalization, aims to take thenatural educationas a new fourth industry. We implant education into the countryside, establish classroom in nature, so that education can be scattered all over the earth, encouraging the understanding between rural and urban people. As a result, the education industry brings income to villagers, activates the countryside, inherits culture and protects environment.

To deal with the diversity of countryside, we put forwardthe rural curriculum, which is a set of universal strategies. Firstly, the strategy quantitively evaluates each rural area covering cultural, industrial, environmental conditions and its development potential. Then, ten prototypes of courses are designed and the quantitative system is used to evaluate these courses. By comparing the quantitative results of the two parts, we can get a set of curriculums most suitable for countryside. Finally, we transform the prototype regionally, making the courses serve both rural and urban children. In the same classroom, rural children and urban children complement each other and develop together harmoniously.

The design is located in a small village in southern China. Based on its culture and natural resources such as farmland, forest, lake and grass, five courses and their architectural forms are designed in detail. These small buildings are constructed with local materials such as bamboo, wood and stone. Children here take nature as their teacher, take the countryside as their classroom. They study on the ridge, among the woods, beside the stream.... Virtually, the countryside is no longer the supplier of the city, it will become a unique place for natural education.

Countryside, as well as rural education, will bepassed on from generation to generation.

The "UIA-HYP CUP 2021 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN" review meeting was hosted by the chairman of the competition organization committee, Dean and Professor of Tianjin University School of Architecture, Kong Yuhang. And Jury Chairman, Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, founder of OMA (Metropolitan) Architects and AMO, Harvard University Professor Rem Koolhaas; Executive Chairman of the Judging Committee of the International University Student Architectural Design Competition, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, National Engineering Survey and Design Master, Honorary Dean and Chief Architect of China Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd. Cui Kai; Vice President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China Artists Association Lv Pinjing, director of the committee; Gong Jun, chairman and general manager of Shanghai Hope Architectural Design Co., Ltd. delivered speeches respectively.

Kong Yuhang, the dean and professor of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, announced the review rules and launched the review meeting. After several rounds of active discussion and strict screening among international and domestic judges, the final list of prize winners was selected.
