They also put forward suggestions on the directions, tendencies, and concerned issues of the inventory planning in China. The opening ceremony ended successfully at noon, followed by a four-day exhibition in TAUPD. On January 16th, it was moved to the Northern Hall of Tianjin University Library, Weijin Road Campus. The exhibition will last until March 2019.
The Inventory Planning Exhibition initiated in January 2016, in order to integrate teaching better with the emerging requirements of urban and rural planning development in China. During recent years, China's urban growth rate becomes relatively stable, and issues like ecological and environmental protection are emphasizedOne one hand, the combination of long-term development and real-life difficulties of cities needs to be taken into consideration. There rise important themes, like the sustainable development of urban communities, the respect for urban history and culture, the intensive use of urban land, and etc. This have prompted the planning academic field to reflect on the previous “incremental planning” approach. The “inventory planning” thinking has gradually become the consensus of the society. On the other hand, the role that planners currently play in the society has gradually evolved from an early simple drawing draftsman to a problem explorer, a coordinator of social contradictions, a resident server in communities and a provider of multidisciplinary knowledge and integrated solutions. Therefore, the pure engineer role from the past is not able to meet the requirements of community planners in the future and that's why students have to improve their comprehensive competence in social research, organization and coordination, report conducting and guide publicity. The abilities listed above are fully considered in this teaching unit: in the early stage, students are allowed to go deep into the community research and complete elaborated research reports; in the late period, students finish on their own the poster design, venue layout, advertisement push, program display, evaluation collection, etc, through which students' subjective initiative is dramatically exerted, resulting in a win-win teaching achievement.
The theme of the inventory planning and design - "urban inventory protection and renewal including community functions" - is the second design (for eight weeks) of Year 3 undergraduate studio in Department of Urban and Rural Planning, School of Architecture, Tianjin University. It functions as the transition link connecting design courses of residential areas and medium-scale cities. In this part, students are required to cooperate in teams (2 people per team) "to further master the fundamental knowledge of the residential community and various design types of urban public buildings; to understand the principles of public building planning and design in business, office, culture, leisure, etc; lastly to develop their ability to apply relevant knowledge (such as urban planning/residential principles, daylight in building, sociology and environmental behavior) in practice.”
At the same time, the design course emphasizes training the ability to combine inventory and incremental planning, where students are asked to think from the aspect of current inventory and identify reasonable functional relationships while deepening their projects in terms of protection, repairing, transforming and renewal. Planning site selection requires students to choose 20-30 hectare to design from the larger given study area. A Diagram Zero and a display model should be included in the results.
Started since January 2016,the Tianjin University's Inventory Planning Exhibition has been held every early January for four times. The exhibition series adhere to the original intention of its establishment, and make effective and impressive responses to China’s current urban and rural development problems. They have played a positive role in the academic reputation of Tianjin University the cultivation of citizens' minds on planning. Definitely, teachers and students from Tianjin University benefit the most from the display. With its help, not only teaching and social practice are closely combined, but also students' overall quality is improved, vision expanded and enthusiasm for study activated. Based on the achievements above, the faculty from the third-grade teaching group of the Urban and Rural Planning Department are determined to continue the Inventory Planning Exhibition to build a brand curriculum in planning teaching.
